Neon Chocobos — Traveling Chocobo Family
A collection case file: four English neons, one Japanese black, one golden serial—and the borderless flock that started the stampede.
#551c · family specimen · identifiers redacted for publishSome chase cards are singles. Traveling Chocobo is a aviary. Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY made one mythic Bird into a Collector Booster ecosystem: neon-ink colorways, a Nomura-nod black, and a serialized gold limited to seventy-seven copies—a wink at FINAL FANTASY VII. Mechanically they are clones. Collectably they are a ladder, a rainbow, and a long-term storage headache (in the best way).
This page is the collection case file. For the JP black neon as a standalone star, see Black Chocobo. For the uncommon DFC that also says “Black Chocobo” on the back face, see that file’s Related section—different bird, same franchise.
Why the set matters
FINAL FANTASY’s CB culture needed a mascot chase. Wizards answered with Traveling Chocobo variants that only appear (or appear most purely) in Collector Boosters, while still selling a real Constructed mythic in Play Boosters. The neon ink treatment turns foiling into costume design: pink, green, yellow, blue for English packs; black reserved for Japanese text; gold reserved for English CBs and a serial stamp. Completing the full rainbow—four EN neons + JP black + gold serial—is the prestige route. Adding base borderless (#406) documents the whole family rather than only the CB exclusives.
Chase dynamic in one breath: gold is lottery, black is import-flavored scarcity, color neons are the obtainable flex, borderless is the gateway, #210 is how you actually play the bird.

Aggregate pull for colorful chocobos (yellow/green/blue/pink/black) sits in the CB “traditional foil / surge / colorful chocobo” slot at less than 1% combined; gold serialized likewise <1% and English-CB exclusive.
Artist (neon / gold / borderless family): Toni Infante.

All of the above share the same rules text and 3/2 body. Non-serialized specials are mechanically identical to the golden serial (per Wizards).

Relation to black chocobo
The JP black neon is one seat at this table, not a separate species. It outranks color neons in lore and scarcity narrative, sits under gold serial, and gets its own page because search traffic and provenance questions deserve a dedicated label. Cross-link aggressively; never imply #201 is part of the neon set.
