D23 2022: Elsa – Snow Queen
Amethyst freeze — ice that worked the same in Anaheim
3/P1 · folio slot photography forthcomingElsa did not need a concert, a dragon, or a duel to announce herself. She needed three ink, a Dreamborn Queen’s composure, and an activated ability that turns opposing characters into temporary ice sculptures. Collector number 3/P1. Amethyst. FREEZE — exert her, exert a chosen opposing character — the kind of elegant cruelty that looks polite until you try to quest through it.
The flavor text on the Expo face is already doing archival work: “Recreated by magical ink, Elsa found herself in an unfamiliar new world. Fortunately, ice works the same way everywhere.” Retail later swapped “unfamiliar” for “entirely.” Same ice. Slightly different weather report. Collectors who care about day-one language keep both sentences in the notebook.
How it got into collections
Portfolio only — not a freebie.
- Contained in the D23 Expo Collector’s Set ($49.99 decorative portfolio)
- Sold at the Disney Lorcana booth, D23 Expo 2022 (Anaheim), September 9–11, 2022
- Foiled; stamped D23 Expo + “1st”
- Part of the ~900-set weekend allotment (≈300/day × 3; Mushu Report wiki)
- Same weekend’s free booth giveaway was Mickey
1/P1+ pin — related bed, different drawer
Creator signatures (aftermarket): Co-designers Ryan Miller & Steve Warner were at the booth; Miller was widely reported excitedly talking with fans and autographing cards (TheGamer D23 interview). Many D23 specimens in the hobby carry creator ink (esp. Miller and/or Warner). Not factory-signed — booth/creator provenance. See the Collector’s Set page.

| Cost | 3 (inkwell-eligible) |
| Strength / Willpower / Lore | 2 / 3 / 1 |
| Classifications | Dreamborn · Hero · Queen · Sorcerer |
| Ability | FREEZE — Exert chosen opposing character. (Activated; exert Elsa.) |
Modest lore, immodest board presence. Freeze is the scientific justification for the quiet panic across the table: she doesn’t need to win the quest race alone if nobody else can ready up.
Promo vs. retail twin (diagnostic traits)
The retail twin arrives later in The First Chapter as Uncommon 41/204 — same Kole art family, same Freeze toolkit — without the Expo stamps. Flavor text is the easiest published delta; stamps remain the diagnostic backbone.
| Attribute | D23 Expo 2022 Promo | The First Chapter retail |
|---|---|---|
| Set code | 3/P1 (D23 Expo printing) | 41/204 |
| Rarity / marks | Promo; D23 Expo logo + “1st” stamp | Uncommon |
| Finish | Foil (Expo portfolio treatment) | Non-foil and cold foil in set |
| Availability | Paid Collector’s Set only (~900 portfolios) | Packs / product after August 18, 2023 |
| Early design quirks | “Illus.” credit styling; early set notation such as 1 TFC; “unfamiliar” flavor wording | Standardized retail; “entirely” flavor wording |
Authentication checklist (loupe optional, honesty required):
- D23 Expo logo
- “1st” edition stamp
- Collector number
3/P1 - Foil finish
- Nicholas Kole / Snow Queen version
- Amethyst · Dreamborn · Hero · Queen · Sorcerer · 3 · 2/3/1 · Freeze
- Flavor text present (note Expo “unfamiliar” vs retail “entirely”)
Miss the stamps and you may still have a perfectly respectable Uncommon. Find the stamps and you have day-one Elsa — ice that learned Anaheim before it learned local game stores.
