Anaheim, September 9–11, 2022. While a free non-foil Mickey moved hand to hand at the booth like a diplomatic passport, another object waited behind the counter: a decorative portfolio, priced for the weekend’s serious hunters, containing six foiled cards that shared Mickey’s archaeological stamps and refused to share his freebie manners.

Call it the D23 Expo Collector’s Set. Call it the paid ensemble. Call it what a preservationist sees under the loupe: Promo Set 1’s numbers 2/P1 through 7/P1, each wearing a D23 Expo mark and a “1st” seal, each dressed in a foil finish the free Mickey never received. Same fossil bed. Different acquisition path. Different drawer label.

The science is almost embarrassingly tidy. Mickey Brave Little Tailor (1/P1) was the public face — free with a pin, limited by daily booth supply. The Collector’s Set was the paid companion piece: $49.99, roughly 300 sets per day across three days, about 900 sets in total (Mushu Report wiki, citing the show-period allotment). When a day sold out, the official account said so with the cheerful firmness of a museum gift shop that has run out of postcards.

Inside the folio: Stitch mid-concert, Elsa mid-freeze, Cruella mid-misery, Maleficent mid-dragon, Robin Hood mid-borrow, Captain Hook mid-challenge. Six characters. Six inks. One weekend when Lorcana stopped being a press release and started being cardboard you could argue about in a line.

How the set entered collections

Distribution was paid, limited, and geographically stubborn:

• Each card stamped D23 Expo + “1st”

• Purchase limits tightened during the weekend as demand outpaced patience (booth badge scanning reported by contemporary show journals)

Mickey Brave Little Tailor (1/P1) was not inside this folio. That card was the free booth giveaway (with pin). Related bed. Separate acquisition. Do not confuse the freebie with the portfolio — collectors have spent years doing exactly that, and the archive refuses to join them.

Until archive folio photos land, treat the container as a diagnostic wrapper: decorative cardboard portfolio holding the six foiled Expo companions. Condition of the folio (creases, corner crush, surface rub) is part of the specimen story for sealed or as-issued sets; loose singles still inherit the stamps and foil as primary ID.

Creator signatures (aftermarket / booth provenance)

Co-designers Ryan Miller and Steve Warner were present at the Lorcana booth. Contemporary reporting (TheGamer D23 interview) describes Miller as hard to miss — tall, boisterous, grinning — excitedly talking with fans and autographing cards between conversations.

Important taxonomic point, because the secondary market loves to blur it:

• These are not factory-signed cards.
• Signatures on D23 specimens are booth / creator interaction provenance — ink applied after the card left the folio (or after the freebie left the booth).
• Many D23 specimens circulating in the hobby carry signatures from key creators, especially Miller and/or Warner. Treat a signature as a provenance claim to verify (hand, placement, period photos, seller history), not as a print trait.

Preservation note: marker ink, pressure, and placement can affect surface grade and long-term stability. A signed Expo card is a different archival object from an unsigned one — document the signature; do not pretend it was born that way.

Diagnostic traits: stamps, foil, early design

Stack evidence. Early Lorcana has genuine QC variance; one tell is rarely gospel.

Documented text/layout deltas between some Expo faces and their retail twins (flavor wording, ability wording polish, quote-divider symbol on Robin Hood, Maleficent’s “opposing” target language, etc.) are noted on the individual case files. Use them as supporting diagnostics — never as a substitute for the stamps.

A curatorial aside the Mickey file already carries: those “1st” seals are not casual décor. Early plans reportedly considered a broader first-edition treatment for The First Chapter; that path was not taken for retail. The D23 Expo cards remain among the clearest public carriers of the mark.

Context: freebie vs portfolio

• Free booth: Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor 1/P1 — non-foil + pin. The whisper you could hold without opening a wallet.
• Paid portfolio: this Collector’s Set — six foiled stamped companions. The ensemble ticket.
• Later: retail twins in The First Chapter without D23/1st stamps and with different foil behavior. Same characters. Not these printings.
• Later still: Gen Con 2023 launch promos and the wider hobby calendar. Ignition comes after the laboratory notebook.
