D23 2022: Captain Hook – Forceful Duelist
Steel Challenger — one ink, two manners, zero mercy
7/P1 · folio slot photography forthcomingNot every day-one fossil needs nine cost and dragon wings. Some of them cost 1, quest for 1, and still ruin someone’s afternoon with Challenger +2. Collector number 7/P1. Steel ink. Dreamborn Villain Pirate Captain. Marcel Berg’s Hook looks ready to make light of a predicament — preferably yours.
Flavor text keeps the duel polite: “He loves to make light of a foe’s predicament.” In the Collector’s Set hierarchy he is the common twin by retail rarity and the closing number by Expo catalog order — which is a charming reminder that historical weight and pack rarity are not the same laboratory measurement. The stamps do not care that retail later filed him as Common 174/204. Anaheim filed him as day one.
How it got into collections
Portfolio only — not a freebie.
- Contained in the D23 Expo Collector’s Set ($49.99 decorative portfolio)
- Sold at the Disney Lorcana booth, D23 Expo 2022 (Anaheim), September 9–11, 2022
- Foiled; stamped D23 Expo + “1st”
- Part of the ~900-set weekend allotment (≈300/day × 3; Mushu Report wiki)
- Same weekend’s free booth giveaway was Mickey
1/P1+ pin — related bed, different drawer
Creator signatures (aftermarket): Co-designers Ryan Miller & Steve Warner were at the booth; Miller was widely reported excitedly talking with fans and autographing cards (TheGamer D23 interview). Many D23 specimens in the hobby carry creator ink (esp. Miller and/or Warner). Not factory-signed — booth/creator provenance. See the Collector’s Set page.

A one-drop that fights like he brought a second ink and forgot to apologize. Challenger is the scientific justification for the smirk: on defense he is modest; on the attack he is arithmetic with a hook.
Promo vs. retail twin (diagnostic traits)
The retail twin arrives later in The First Chapter as Common 174/204 — same Berg art family, same Challenger toolkit — without the Expo stamps. Lorcana Player notes light production updates from the D23 face to retail; stamps remain the primary ID.

- D23 Expo logo
- “1st” edition stamp
- Collector number
7/P1 - Foil finish
- Marcel Berg / Forceful Duelist version
- Steel · Dreamborn · Villain · Pirate · Captain · 1 · 1/2/1 · Challenger +2

Miss the stamps and you may still have a perfectly respectable Common. Find the stamps and you have day-one Hook — the folio’s closing argument, delivered with Challenger math.
